SIDNEY, NY (AP) -- A National Weather Service team is investigating whether a tornado touched down in the Binghamton area.

A line of severe thunderstorms brought high winds and lashing rain Sunday evening to the rural town of Sidney, about 30 miles northeast of Binghamton.

With eyewitness reports of a funnel cloud touching down, a team from the weather service is heading to Sidney on Monday to determine whether it was a tornado.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage after the storm.

The storms left thousands without power in the Hudson Valley Sunday night, but only scattered customers were still without power Monday morning.

The storm comes less than two weeks after a tornado ripped through the Southern Tier city of Elmira.
