Ted and Betty Stark have now embarked on their dream vacation, literally.

The Manlius couple was set to take their boat  to Florida, when Hurricane Sandy forced New York State to close the Erie Canal. They got the notice on October 26th, the same day they were going to leave the Brewerton Boat Yard.

Now, the canal is reopened so they've started the trip on their boat, the Simple Pleasures, across Oneida Lake, down the Erie Canal to the Hudson River, visits in the New York/New Jersey area, then down the Intercoastal Waterway to Florida.

The decision to go ahead with the trip was a difficult one, and even though Ted is an experienced boater, there are concerns about conditions--especially debris in the water.

The Starks are blogging about the trip, and you can follow along. You can also read our previous story as Sandy was approaching.
